When I am digging targets pinpointed by my metal detector I almost always encounter roots of some kind. I used to chop away at these with my digging tool. I finally got smart and now carry a small pruning shears with me. I find it so much easier to snip the roots out of the way, and I don't risk damaging the target.

I carry a set of pruning shears also.  As you stated they work well for roots and I have found that they work really well on briers also when out relic hunting and trying to get yourself, detector and head phones through thick briers.  A snip or two with the shears and you can ease up a couple of more steps without jerking your head phones off your head...

I don't carry any pruning shears ... I simply carry a medium size pair of wire cutters, or side cutters if you will.. they work great and never wear out.
